Ally McCoist urgest Chelsea outcast Romelu Lukaku to avoid returning to the club

Former Scottish superstar Ally McCoist backs 31-year-old Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku to avoid returning to the Blues, as he had an impressive loan stint with Italian club AS Roma.

After joining Stamford Bridge for £97 million in 2021, Lukaku appeared to have made a valiant comeback from Inter Milan. However, once he went on record and told the Italian media that he was not happy halfway through the season, his spectacular comeback turned into a nightmare.

He was sent back on loan to his former club Inter after just a season before securing another season-long stay in Italy this year. At Roma, where he made 47 appearances in all competitions and scored 21 goals, Lukaku gradually rebuilt his career.

The 31-year-old also realises that he had an amazing campaign in Italy and that he could feel comfortable and play with his true potential, which he could never do at Stamford Bridge.

McCoist backs the forward player to remain with the Italian club, saying:

“I actually think Romelu Lukaku is probably better off staying in Italy. Because I don’t see, and I might be wrong, I don’t see Lukaku playing in the top four or five teams in the Premier League at this moment in time.”

“What’s happened to him recently is he’s had most of his success abroad, particularly in Italy and I just think he might be suited to that style of football. He might be suited to that kind of temperament, that kind of country and I just think that’s where he’ll continue to play. I don’t see him, I might be wrong and time will tell, but I just don’t see him coming back playing in the top flight any time soon in England.”

Given that the forward player is already keen on moving permanently to the Italian side, Chelsea would also like to sell him and use the funds to bring in some quality transfer targets they are already eyeing this summer.

Lukaku hopes to enjoy the next season in Italy

Chelsea are already very close to a PSR breach and offloading Lukaku would significantly help them balance their books. Although Chelsea need a quality offensive player in their squad, the 31-year-old doesn’t seem ready to play on an elite stage like the Premier League.

The Blues are entering a new era this summer with Enzo Maresca as their new head coach. Chelsea are already searching the market for quality additions to strengthen their squad according to the new boss’ system and Lukaku wouldn’t fit in it.
