Ex-Chelsea manager admits regretting leaving Chelsea after a solitary year at the helm
Maurizio Sarri opens up about his exit from Chelsea, and the Italian head coach says he regrets leaving the club when he decided to join Juventus after just a year at Stamford Bridge. However, in his only season as Blues coach, the 65-year-old guided the Blues to the Europa League against Arsenal.
However, they suffered a defeat in the Community Shield against Manchester City. Sarri’s decision to leave the Blues came as a bit of a surprise, despite the head coach ending the season with a trophy.
He wanted to return to his country and wanted to manage Juventus. Sarri succeeded Antonio Conte and was seen as one of the best-underrated coaches. After his exit, former Blues player Frank Lampard was named the head coach.
In a recent interview, Sarri recalled his time at Chelsea and said he now regrets leaving the club after he opted to return to Italy. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said via Fabrizio Romano:
“Leaving Chelsea has been my biggest mistake. There was a good basis to stay there and continue at the club, but I made a big mistake in that moment. We won the Europa League; the project was great, but I wanted to return to Italy, unfortunately.”
It was a bit of a strange decision from him because we should have continued at Chelsea, which maybe would have led us to the Premier League title the next season. He showed what a pragmatic coach he is and led us to the Europa League trophy in his first season as Blues coach, and he also had the backing of the board to continue at the club.
What if Sarri had continued at Chelsea for more seasons? things would have been different. after Lampard succeeded him we went through a period of poor season until Thomas Tuchel replaced the former England star and we were able to get back to our winning ways. It was Sarri’s decision and even the club couldn’t do much to keep him for another season.
