Three Premier League clubs are backing Manchester City to fight the league over their 155 breaches, and among them is Chelsea, who have shown sympathy for the City after the league champions declared war on the Premier League over spending rules.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Newcastle are standing with the current league champions and feel they have valid arguments with their spending. The Blues have also presented their argument concerning multi-club ownership.
It is understood that Villa co-owner, the Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris, is close to City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and that he shares frustrations over imposed spending limits.
City 115 charges will come into effect in November, but on Monday, the club is set to take the league to court, which will have a two-week hearing. They want changes to APT rules, brought in following the Saudi Newcastle takeover in November 2021, thrown out. They are also claiming damages.
The Blues have also participated in this and feel that the league limit on the club’s spending will cause damage to the side and will restrict them from spending. The Blues’ current sponsorship with Infinite Athlete has joint owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, who want better functioning concerning APT.
When the club strikes a deal with a new sponsorship, it is sometimes deemed inflated by the league, so this is why Chelsea wants more clarity on multi-club ownership, which comes under APT, which is thought to be part of their argument.
Since new ownership, the club has made wise spending decisions and has complied with the league’s financial rules. When you are making new rules and restricting their spending, it will always affect the club and cause problems because the big sides will also spend a lot of money to remain competitive in the competitions.
Last season, the Blues had to abandon two sponsorships because the English top flight labelled them as illegal, and this clearly makes it hard for the clubs to now find relevant sponsors. Hopefully, Chelsea will present the best case in their term and have better backing.
