Chelsea 'one to watch' in race for £70m superstar with World Cup winner's medal
Ben Jacobs has provided a new update on Julian Alvarez and his future at Manchester City and confirmed the club is in no position to sell the striker amid interest from Chelsea. Alvarez said he was unhappy with his playing time at City. The Argentine striker seems to have a price tag worth around £70m+.
Alvarez who won the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentine has fallen in pecking order, with Erling Haaland occupying the No. 9 spot. And if this continues, then the former River Plate striker could ask for a move away from City. The Blues have been looking to sign a centre-forward, and if the chances come, they might pounce on it.
Chelsea have centred their focus on signing a striker, and in the summer they will explore their options with the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Victor Osimhen on their radar. Chelsea are also interested in signing Aston Villa forward John Duran.
However, Jacobs confirms City are unlikely to let Alvarez leave, as they consider him an important part of the team despite being a second-choice striker at the club. In his latest exclusive column for Caught Offside’s The Daily Briefing, he said:
“Julian Alvarez is not a player Manchester City wants to lose, but it’s clear he wants some guarantees over playing time. That makes the situation open. Chelsea could be one to watch, but they haven’t yet made any kind of meaningful approach.’’
Alvares is 24 and will soon enter his prime. It’s obvious he doesn’t want to continue to be a backup striker because he knows his potential and can contribute as a centre-forward. If he makes himself available, then plenty of clubs will express interest because he is a talented No. 9.
Chelsea wouldn’t miss a chance to sign him, but as of now, City are unlikely to entertain an offer for him. but at some point, he would want to be the preferred striker, and we saw what happened with Cole Palmer, who wanted more game time and decided to leave City. Since coming to Chelsea, he has established himself as one of the best young players. Thus, Alvarez could follow the same path if he wants to be the first choice.
