Barcelona academy player Marc Guiu emerges as new target for Cheslea

Fabrizio Romano reports, (h/t Guillem Balague) that Chelsea have expressed interest in Barcelona striker Marc Guiu. The Blues can acquire the 18-year-old youngster for just €6 million. The youngster’s contract is also set to expire next season, which could put the Blues in a position to sign the forward if Barcelona fail to renew his deal.

Under former manager Xavi, Guiu was given a chance to showcase his talent last season, and the youngster appeared in seven matches last term, scoring a winner against Athletic Club and an equaliser against Royal Antwerp.

However, the Barca academy player has spent most of the season with Barca Atletic and has barely received minutes on the pitch for the senior team, which further indicates that the move would be pointless given he has no European experience and is too raw to play in the Premier League.

Signing Guiu will be a poor decision by the club because if we are pursuing him, he will need some seasons to get ready. At this rate, we cannot develop two young strikers at the club; we need at least an experienced centre-forward to bring competition for the starting spot.

Guiu hasn’t even been promoted to the first Barcelona team, which further indicates why we should avoid going for him. Despite being a La Masia player and certainly very talented, he needs more time for development.

We cannot keep signing young players and expect them to perform reliably in every game. This will only impede the growth of the club and will only affect the club’s relationship with the fans and question the Blues’ ambitions under Todd Boehly’s ownership.

The Blues should look for better options, and if they don’t find any, then we have enough options in the squad who can operate as No. 9. If we want a striker as young as Guiu, then we can instead integrate Deivid Washington into the senior team.
