Chelsea close to signing Barcelona starlet after triggering his 7-figure release clause

Journalist Gerard Romero says Chelsea have activated the release clause of Marc Guiu

According to Spanish reporter Gerard Romero, Chelsea are now seriously considering signing Barcelona youngster Marc Guiu after they activated the centre-forward’s €6 million (£5 million) release clause.

Guiu was elevated to the first team last season and appeared in seven matches, scoring two goals across all competitions. Competition for the No. 9 spot saw the striker return to the Barcelona B team, where he scored six goals in 17 appearances.

Now the Spanish star could be on his way to Cheslea, as the Blues seem to have activated his release clause. Bayern Munich were also keen on signing the youngster, but the Blues are actively pressing to land the La Masia Academy star.

The Blues have been targeting young players since the change of ownership. Last season, they signed Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal, who struggled to make an impact but finished the season on a strong note with 17 goals across all competitions.

Chelsea have prioritised signing a striker for next season, and now Guiu seems to be the leading candidate the Blues want. The centre-forward is too young and hasn’t even played a full La Liga match for the senior team.

His signing could prove to be another poor choice from the club because you are signing a player who hasn’t played enough minutes for his senior side. But what stands out for Guiu is his ability to finish, as he has a great presence in the box and has an eye for goal.

Another key feature about him is the timing of his runs from behind and his technical aspect of the game, where he knows where to be in the box and strike the ball. If the Blues complete his signing, he could prove to be a perfect backup striker to Jackson, who seems to be ready to be a No. 1 option for the striker position next season.
