Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku was once again in the limelight during the Belgium game against Slovakia, as the Red Devils suffered an agonising 1-0 defeat in their Euro 2024 opening game and Belgium head coach Domenico Tedesco made his feelings clear on the 31-year-old’s ineptness in front of goal and claimed he doesn’t need advice to score goals.
Lukaku always appears to be a shadow of himself in the clutch games and once again he squandered many chances and had two goals disallowed by VAR, which could have decided the game for Belgium and guided them to a comfortable first win of the tournament.
In one of his country’s most crucial matches, he disappeared once more, and when Belgium most needed him to lead them to victory, he looked like an ineffective striker. He constantly gives his side a hard time in these matches and then becomes subject to mockery.
The Red Devils’ new head coach, Domenico Tedesco, said he didn’t have a problem with the former Everton centre-forward and also took a slight dig at his finishing. He said via Mirror:
“We’re very honest; he’s been playing for Belgium for a long time and knows very well how to score. Tonight he did score goals, and ultimately they didn’t count, but if he needs anything, I’m here for him.”
Tedesco’s remarks highlight his disappointment from Lukaku who missed two fantastic opportunities to score goals. If the 31-year-old had been more effective in front of goal, Belgium would have won the match. Lukaku is going to be Lukaku, and he has demonstrated this before. He tends to operate in this way and overlooks the most obvious opportunities.
With a goal at his mercy, he plays like an inexperienced striker and misses such chances, which is very annoying because it’s the least expected from a forward who has been playing at a high level for a long time. His performance will, of course, affect Chelsea’s chances of selling him. Fortunately, though, it was only the first match of the competition, hence the best we can hope for is that he continues to hone his skills and scores goals. If not, the Blues will once more have difficulty selling him in the transfer widow.
