Opinion: Chelsea may not be right in overlooking Ivan Toney for foreign options as Osimhen and Sesko claim emerges

Big boost for Chelsea as European giants now drop out of race for €295k-per-week superstar

Chelsea have been linked with Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Sesko and Ivan Toney for the No.9 target

Chelsea have been linked with a number of strikers this summer, and the Blues will look to add a forward with a clinical finisher. The Blues acquired Nicolas Jackson last season, who had a hard time adjusting to the Premier League, but the forward ultimately found his form and finished the season with 14 goals in the league.

However, the Blues are going to sign a forward once the window opens; there are already a few centre-forwards linked with a move to Chelsea. Chelsea has courted Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko, but their release clause could act as a major hurdle.

Chelsea are also keen on signing Ivan Toney, who could be available for a little over £30 million to £40 million. Toney returned to action after completing his eight-month betting ban. The forward, though, wasn’t at his best, as he ended the season with just four league goals.

Despite his poor season, should Chelsea target the England striker instead of Sesko and Osimhen?

The Nigerian striker has a £113 million release clause, which the Blues could find challenging to activate the clause as they first have to sell players and generate profit, while Sesko will be available for a €65 million price.

Why shouldn’t Chelsea go for Toney, who might be a better option than Osimhen and Sesko? Toney last season proved to be a top striker, finishing as the third-top scorer behind Hary Kane and Erling Haaland, though he missed most of the matches of the recently concluded campaign, which saw him fail to find his form.

Toney stands out among Osimhen and Sesko because he has Premier League experience, is physically robust, and can challenge any defender. He showed his qualities at a struggling team and one can envision how many goals he can score at Chelsea given the Blues possess top players-makers who will feed the forward.

Under new manager Enzo Maresca, whichever striker we sign, will need to help re-build the game from the back, given that his system is possession-based football and Osimhen is only a threat in the box, while Seso is still young and will take time to settle in the league. Toney is a complete forward who can help build up, possesses great box presence, and has little injury history.
