Mauricio Pochettino passes the buck; does not take up responsibility for the Chelsea struggles
Speaking ahead of the last matchday in the Premier League as quoted by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Mauricio Pochettino seemingly passes the buck without taking responsibility for the struggles that Chelsea have seen this season by claiming that what he is working with is not his team but rather what he inherited.
Chelsea have seemingly turned their fortunes around in the last few weeks and the talks surrounding the future of Mauricio Pochettino have died down. Statements like these make us wonder though if he is the right man to take the club forward when he isn’t taking responsibility for the struggles they have undergone this season.
The argument by the former Tottenham manager is that it’s not “his team” but rather “Chelsea’s team” which begs the question – who signed Axel Disasi, Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, Moises Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer? With the exception of Jackson, all other players were signings made after the appointment of the Argentinian manager.
When we further consider the fact that five out of the six names have been regular starters throughout this season, we are not sure Pochettino has a point here. Unless these are signings that the club made without actually consulting with the manager or against his wishes, this is very much a ‘Mauricio Pochettino’ team.
Even signings like Enzo Fernandez, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Marc Cucurella, Malo Gusto and Noni Madueke who are not from the Pochettino era have performed admirably at different times this season. Add to this the old brigade like Raheem Sterling, Reece James (when fit) and Ben Chilwell and we can see what a talented squad the Blues have at their disposal.
Speaking about the situation at Chelsea, here is what Mauricio Pochettino had to say regarding it being Chelsea’s team and not his and what kind of football he’d like to play.
“This is not my team. This is Chelsea’s team. You know my style after 15 years working, how we want to play, in possession…It’s not important what I’m going to say. After you are going to twist things!”.
Next season, Pochettino, if he stays, will have no excuses. In fact, he would be on a tight leash to get his team performing really early into the campaign. With another transfer window behind him, he cannot come out and claim that it is not his team anymore. It would be good to see the Argentine manager make his team play the football he wants them to.
Right now, the priority would be to end the season on a high and keep the momentum going into next season. Chelsea are in a good moment (something we haven’t been able to say too often in recent times) and we must look to build on this and keep moving into the future.
Let’s hope this season is our last painful one as Chelsea fans and that good times await us. Whether it is with or without Pochettino remains to be seen but exciting times lie ahead and let’s all look forward to just that.
