Former Watford player Troy Deeney has given his verdict on Chelsea’s current season and feels the club has endured a decent season and should continue with Mauricio Pochettino for the next campaign.
Chelsea will face Bournemouth to wrap up their 2023–24 season, and a win will see them finish the season in sixth place, which will see them secure a European spot for the next campaign. However, since the start of this term, the club has endured a bumpy campaign mixed with inconsistent results.
It appeared the Blues had finally turned up, only for them to lose the next game, and this has been the summary of the club under Pochettino, who remained under constant fire. His future continues to be up in the air, and the board will decide his future after the end of the season.
But the current Forest Green Rovers striker feels Chelsea should continue with Pochettino despite their inconsistent season. Speaking to Sun Sport, he said:
‘’Weirdly, it’s Chelsea, purely because of their inconsistencies—never knowing which Chelsea is going to turn up when. One week they’re s**t, the next they’re good. They’ve got exceptionally good players and a great manager in Mauricio Pochettino.’’
It’s realistic because we performed like teams and seemed to have various personalities throughout each match. We will appear to be a team full of inexperienced players and flaws in one game, and after that, we will look like a team starving for victory. It is obvious that this young squad will cause an upturn in performance because it is hard to sustain a winning run when you have a youthful squad.
Deeney’s words make a lot of sense, but he is aware of our squad ceiling and Pochettino’s work because we have still managed to climb to the sixth spot after spending the entire campaign 10th or 11th. We next face Bournemouth, and a win will see us remain sixth, and maybe we can finish fifth if Tottenham Hotspur lose to Sheffield United.
