Italian coach Enzo Maresca front-runner to become the next Chelsea manager

Chelsea and their search for a manager has commenced, and the club has made a shortlist of head coaches that will become Mauricio Pochettino’s successor next season and Enzo Maresca is one name they are targeting. There are plenty of names on the list, and the club has to find an ideal fit that will align with their policies.

According to the Daily Mail, Leicester City coach Enzo Maresca has emerged as a strong candidate to take the hot seat at the club after steering the Foxes to Premier League promotion. However, many wouldn’t know much about Maresca, who was also the assistant coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

The Italian coach never managed the first team before being appointed as the Foxes manager and taking them to the English top-flight promotion in his first season as their head coach. Now he seems to have impressed the club board enough to become the West Londoners manager, who possesses a squad full of youth players.

Maresca is certainly an unknown name among the fans and could be a strange appointment by the board. Will it be an ideal choice for the club? Chelsea wants a manager who will play possession-based football, which the club couldn’t see under Pochettino as his style was too vertical and counter-attacking.

Similar to Guardiola, the Maresca system allows them to have a lot of possession during the game and play fantastic transition football. In order to regulate the tempo, an inverted fullback who plays in midfield is frequently used. Maresca likes his team to keep possession as much as possible and use their meticulous passing to take advantage of the opposition’s space.

Given that he has worked at City, he is a more suitable coach as he is aware of handling big players, so he becomes instantly an ideal choice to replace Pochettino at the club. However, there are a lot of things to consider before appointing him because, given the squad, the manager will have to see if the team suits his system.
