Chelsea lay down £35m pay or leave ultimatum for Champions League finalist

Chelsea will not go below £35 million price tag for Champions League star loanee

In an attempt to finalise Ian Maatsen‘s permanent departure from Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window, Chelsea will not contemplate selling him for less than £35 million since they are still certain that Borussia Dortmund will finally provide the necessary funds.

The Blues are getting ready for a new chapter in their history as they search for a new manager after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino amicably earlier this week. However, they are refusing to let the uncertainty surrounding Pochettino’s replacement interfere with their plans for signings and departures.

Ideally, Chelsea should just focus on getting the appropriate successor to Pochettino for now. But they do not seem to be diverting their mind from considering other deals as well.

Chelsea is still firm that unless a deal of £35 million is made, they will not approve Maatsen’s permanent departure. However, Dortmund has decided against initiating talks as they are certain that they are the front-runner to sign him.

Maatsen have become an impressive addition and an integral part of the Bundesliga giants making an important 22 appearances for the club and despite of being a defender he has 5 G/A contributions for them already.

He has played a massive role in the victories of Dortmund this season, leading the club to Champions League finals at Wembley on June 1 against Real Madrid. With a perfect debut at Dortmund being on loan, it is no doubt in the fact that Maatsen is enjoying his stay at the Bundesliga club and would like to continue his journey for them permanently.

Intricately for his suitors, the 22-year-old signed a new long-term contract with his parent club before moving to Dortmund, tying him down until the summer of 2026. This means that the West Londoners are not under pressure to cash in before the summer transfer window closes.

Chelsea is playing it smart with the transfer as they know Maatsen is now an important part of Dortmund’s squad they will eventually accept the 35 million fee to secure the star defender’s services permanently.
