Ben Chilwell was spotted during the F1 competition, and the Chelsea player was asked numerous questions, one of which was about Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking. Chilwell, who missed half of the season with an injury, felt it was disappointing to see the Argentine leaving the club on mutual consent.

Chelsea’s season got off to a dreadful start under Pochettino, and the Argentine manager struggled to turn things around since it took him an extended period to change the team around. Chelsea showed signs of rebounding as the season came to an end; the team finished in sixth position, despite spending the majority of the season withering in 10th place.

However, it appeared that the board was hoping for more from the gaffer and ultimately decided to part ways with him last week. Chelsea have now listed a shortlist of a few managers who can replace the Argentine next season. Chilwell revealed his dressing room reaction after the sacking of Pochettino and told Sky Sports via Mirror:

“Yeah, you know it was a surprise. I think with the end of the season and how well the team did, it was definitely a surprise, but you know, good luck to him wherever he goes moving forward.’’

It was a surprising exit from the Argentine because, in the end, he looked to convince the fans that he was the right head coach to lead the team next season. Not many would have imagined Pochettino leaving the club this early after he managed to show that he was capable of driving this young squad next campaign.

It was not satisfactory, though, as the board had higher expectations for him than to place sixth. But he’s not even at blame. It will undoubtedly take him a season to develop an untested team that is participating in the league for the first time, so it was unjust to see him go in this manner.

Meanwhile, Chilwell himself barely played last season, constantly suffering new injuries. As a vice-captain, he should be available all the time given in the 2022-23 campaign he was not fully fit and missed the entire term with a hamstring injury.
