There are plenty of rumours surrounding Karim Benzema’s links with Chelsea, and it’s confusing because during transfers we hear many such speculations.
A recent report also says the Blues have expressed interest in signing the former Real Madrid hitman, who singlehandedly inspired the Los Blancos to the 2022–23 Champions League and won the Ballon d’Or. He was the first Real player to win the coveted award after the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo.
That season, the French star recorded 31 goals in 43 matches across all competitions. Even at 35, it was his best season, which explains why he still has an immense amount of predatory flair in front of goal.
At 36 years old, Benzema is an accomplished striker with a boatload of background. He has experience playing for Real Madrid whose mindset is to win and remain unwavering up until the very end of the match. This will also aid Chelsea’s young players and they will inherit his winning attitude.
But many would argue that his age might be a factor in why he won’t be able to match the intensity of the Premier League. Well, we signed Thiago Silva when he was 35, and now look at him at 39; he is featuring in every game this season.
It’s not about age; it’s about how the players see themselves and stay in shape as they mature, and how well they perform on big stages. The former forward for Olympique Lyon checks all the criteria and will be ready to combat the Blues’ persistent goal-scoring problems, which might redeem them this season.
Meanwhile, the Blues will have to wait until next summer to land a striker on a permanent deal, so until then, we get Benzema on loan, and it will be a prudent move to have an experienced striker.
But the main issue remains his wages, which the club won’t be able to afford, and if we are to sign him. We will need to offload a few players because we currently have two strikers, and they will also demand some game time.
This is a risk, but it will benefit us in terms of performance and boost our goal-scoring chances even more. So, let’s see what the Blues have in store for a short-term striker before the end of the winter window.
