Pundit says Manchester City didn’t make a mistake by selling Cole Palmer to rivals Chelsea

Shaun Wright-Phillips believes Manchester City didn’t make mistake by letting Cole Palmer join Chelsea

Shaun Wright-Phillips feels Manchester City didn’t make a mistake by allowing Cole Palmer to leave the club for Chelsea. The Blues made a move for U21 England international £45 million, and the forward has settled well at West London, scoring two goals.

Palmer’s signing has paid dividends, and the 21-year-old has established himself as a starter under Mauricio Pochettino. He has transitioned into a key player for us.

At Manchester City, the forward barely had enough games under his belt, and other players were ahead of him in pecking order, so it was questionable that he would get decent playing time.

A move away only appeared sensible for him to play regularly and Chelsea were quick to swoop in to add more attacking ammunition to the squad.

How quickly Palmer has made an impact at Chelsea raised the question of whether City made a mistake by selling him, but former Chelsea star Wright-Phillips feels Pep Guardiola’s side didn’t make any blunder, (h/t Express) and told Betway:

“I don’t think it’s a mistake (City selling Palmer). At Manchester City, Pep is not a manager who makes it difficult for you to leave. If you want to go, he understands and respects that it’s football. That’s the impression that I got from the way things have gone over the years.”

Because of the harmony Guardiola has brought to the team, they are now among the most dominant squads in Europe. He understands the players’ decisions and is clear about his objectives for the team. No matter how successful you are, he doesn’t really care. If he doesn’t want you, you will be sold, as Joao Cancelo was. The Portuguese was one of the top fullbacks in the Premier League.

Palmer’s circumstance is distinct, though, as he wasn’t receiving enough playing time there, and Guardiola has many options to use in Palmer’s position, so by the looks of it they didn’t make a mistake by selling him. However, considering how quickly he became appreciated at the club, he is now an asset to us.
