As per a tweet from Matt Law of The Telegraph, Liverpool have outbid Chelsea for a potential transfer of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo during this summer window.
It is also revealed that Chelsea’s bid for Romeo Lavia last night is linked to the fact that Liverpool may have stolen a march in the Caicedo race.
Brighton have been very adamant about what the Ecuador international is worth. They have rejected multiple offers from the Blues for him. The latest was worth £80m. The tweet does say though that the player still wants a move to Stamford Bridge done.
It feels like a big transfer window game. Liverpool are supposedly outbidding Chelsea for their long-term summer target but the expectation is that the player will still come to West London. An intriguing 48-72 hours upcoming because clubs may want to find the final solution before they face off in the Premier League opener on Sunday.
We cannot stand here and say Lavia and Caicedo are the same players. Both are similar in profile and the positions they play in, but the latter is ahead of the former in terms of development and international experience.
So, the club getting Caicedo will get a better deal out of this. The fact that Chelsea have let this become a transfer race is a bit embarrassing.
All this time, we knew that Mauricio Pochettino needs a strong central midfielder to partner Enzo Fernandez. But, the club tried penny-pinching despite knowing that Brighton are not ones to easily budge. Now, they are in a situation where Caicedo might go to Liverpool and Chelsea get Lavia.
But, nothing can be said with certainty at this time. Let’s see what unfolds in the coming hours.
