Ian Wright has stressed how Chelsea will address their goalscoring issues despite the club reinforcing their midfield after the signing of Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Blues beat Liverpool to sign the Ecuadorian midfielder, breaking the British transfer record, and are also closing in on the signing of Romeo Lavia from Southampton.
Following the acquisition of Caicedo, the west Londoners will now look more robust in midfield following the exits of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, and Jorginho this year.
While Wright claimed the acquisition of the 21-year-old will solidify their midfield with Enzo Fernandez operating alongside him, his main concern was who will score goals for Chelsea, (h/t Metro) as he told Premier League productions:
‘It’s a great move for Moises Caicedo, especially because he’ll be playing alongside Enzo Fernandez. I think Enzo and Caicedo will be the two in front of the defence that will really solidify it. But in respect of them being a challenge [to Man City and Arsenal], I don’t know who is going to score the goals for them.”
Wright is right that our midfield has been stable and is now well-organised for many years. We are also now on the verge of signing Lavia which will further make our midfield formidable.
Our options up front, for now, are Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja, while Christopher Nkunku is set to be out for months after sustaining a knee injury. People seem to be writing off the 22-year-old Senegal international.
He was quite lively in the 1-1 league draw against Liverpool, although he did miss a couple of chances. Raheem Sterling, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke cost us a pretty penny and Mauricio Pochettino should also expect them to chip in. One cannot predict what happens this season because many of our youngsters are playing at this level for the first time.
For now, on paper, the team looks very strong. The best part about it is that given their age, these players are only going to get better from here.
