Chelsea reach agreement for €16m package to sign 23-year-old MLS star

Chelsea reach an agreement worth €16m to sign New England Revolution keeper Djordje Petrovic

As per an exclusive from Tom Bogert for The Athletic (subscription required), Chelsea have agreed a transfer worth €16m with New England Revolution to sign goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

The 23-year-old will now undergo a medical before signing his contract to become a Chelsea player in the coming days. He is regarded as the best goalkeeper in the MLS circuit.

Hence, the Blues are getting a seasoned player who is still young for a goalkeeper. The club were on the prowl for an addition in that department following the departure of Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid.

Coming back to Petrovic, the 23-year-old started his career in Serbia before moving to New England last April. He made 48 appearances for the MLS side so far, keeping 15 clean sheets (Transfermarkt). He has made two appearances for the senior national team as well.

The Serbian is an excellent shot-stopper who has good reflexes to react to shots from short and long range. He is still learning the art of playing out from the back, something that is a must when playing under Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea’s current number one is Robert Sanchez. The Spaniard is close to a complete keeper when it comes to being good at shot-stopping and passing out from the back.

There is a high chance that Petrovic is signed as a backup to the former Brighton stopper. The 23-year-old would probably get time and space to further develop his game before staking a claim to start games regularly.

With Chelsea not in Europe this season, the Serbian would hope that he gets picked for the domestic cup ties. He would need to do well in those games to earn the stripes of potentially becoming the first-choice keeper in the future.
