Chelsea mulling move for freshly-relegated 24-year-old midfielder playing in England

Chelsea considering move for Tyler Adams to reinforce their defensive midfield

Chelsea are considering a move for Tyler Adams after the Leeds United player was included in Mauricio Pochettino’s shortlist to strengthen their midfield.

According to the Times (Subscription Required) [h/t Daily Mail] the 24-year-old midfielder is on the shortlist of the former Paris Saint-Germain boss, and the player has a release clause that could be activated after Leeds were relegated to the Championship.

The Blues are light in midfield after the departures of Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mason Mount and N’Golo Kante in the summer window. Chelsea are currently in negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign Moises Caicedo.

Adams is currently recuperating from a hamstring injury after undergoing surgery in March, and his return remains uncertain. The 24-year-old failed to prevent his side’s demotion to the Championship after missing the final months of the season.

According to Athletic (Subscription Required), his release clause is estimated to be about £20 million, which Chelsea won’t have any issue activating if they make it obvious they are interested in signing him.

Chelsea currently have plenty of midfielders whose future is yet to be decided by Pochettino, and if they are able to sign Adam, then a few of them could be loaned out for game time. The former RB Leipzig midfielder is unlikely to feature in our opening match against Liverpool on August 13 even if we are able to sign him because of his injury.

Chelsea could use a player like him in the near future, but we should continue to pursue Caicedo because his signing will immediately boost our midfield. After we sign the Ecuador international, it will make complete sense to target more midfielders.

Adams isn’t a stranger to the Premier League. He played in 24 PL games in his first season in England after signing a five-year deal with the Whites last summer (Transfermarkt). It remains to be seen if the 24-year-old USA international finds it acceptable to be a player in the Championship.

If not, Stamford Bridge could be a brilliant step up for him.
