Pundit says Chelsea fans should be ‘upset’ over Mason Mount joining Man United

Chelsea fans should be ‘upset’ over Mason Mount joining Man United, says pundit

Former Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona player Emmanuel Petit has opined that Chelsea fans should be upset over Mason Mount joining Manchester United.

The English playmaker entered the final year of his deal this month and was sold to the Red Devils for a fee of £60million. This ended his 18-year association with the Blues and any hopes of becoming a Chelsea legend.

Petit has since voiced his opinion over the 24-year-old joining the Blues’ direct rivals in the Premier League. He told DAZN Bet (h/t Football.London):

“To be honest with you, I am quite surprised because I was certain he would stay at the club. To have seen all the speculation about him for the past six months, for him not to play and then for the club to bring in all of these players is strange… If I’m a Chelsea fan, I would be very upset because he’s an Englishman from the academy.

“The best moments of the last two decades for Chelsea fans have always centred around a core of English players that really get the club. Just look at what they achieved with John Terry and Frank Lampard in their spine. When I look at the current squad, apart from Reece James there is not a player that the fans can recognise themselves in. “Mason Mount is one of a few players who represented the fans in the dressing room and I think he was the future of the club.”

After sealing his transfer to Manchester United, Mount claimed that the Blues informed him that he won’t be in their plans. If that is the case, then it was truly odd from the board, considering the player’s age and profile.

At 24, he is about to enter the best years of his career. Moreover, we have seemingly based our transfer strategy on signing young players on the brink of becoming quality talent. Why sell one that we already had?

Especially one that was homemade. That being said, there wouldn’t have been much the club could have done if Mount wasn’t open to extending his stay at the club beyond next season.

Otherwise, we would have lost him on a free transfer. Manchester United have a talented, versatile player on their hands and it won’t be a surprise if he becomes a superstar under Erik ten Hag. For Chelsea, they must now seek to replace the Englishman.
