How would Kylian Mbappe perform at Chelsea?
Chelsea are in negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over the permanent transfer of Kylian Mbappe to Stamford Bridge, despite Liverpool entering talks with the Ligue 1 club.
According to the Daily Record, (h/t Mirror) the West Londoners are hoping to bring Mbappe to the Premier League and are ready to offer a player-plus-cash deal for the 24-year-old. It would be one of the biggest transfers in recent times should the deal go through.
It is understood that Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and his co-owner will hold direct talks with Al-Khelaifi regarding the move. The Ligue 1 winners want to sell the 2018 World Cup winner after he claimed he wouldn’t renew his contract beyond 2024. They are now eager to cash in on him this summer rather than lose him in a year’s time.
PSG don’t want to lose him for free and have put him on the market, where plenty of clubs have lined up for his signing. Saudi club Al-Hilal has made an astonishing £259 million offer, but Mbappe has rejected the bid. It is now a race against time for PSG to come to an amicable solution.
Liverpool are also in talks and are mulling over signing him on loan; this will see the forward join Real Madrid next summer for free and prevent PSG from losing arguably the best player in the world for free. However, in the end, it will come down to Mbappe’s decision, as Real looks like his likely destination if he is sold, and the player will have to make a decision before September 1.
Chelsea going for him makes little sense considering the revamp needed all across the board at Stamford Bridge. There is little doubt that the Blues need a prolific attacker but putting all our eggs in one basket for Mbappe while the midfield is crying out for additions could prove counter productive.
A player of Mbappe’s ability is built for Champions League competition, but neither Liverpool nor Chelsea will be able to provide him with it for the upcoming season, which may influence his decision to join either squad. Mbappe, who has so far indicated a preference for joining Real Madrid, will ultimately make the decision, even if Liverpool or Chelsea reach a personal agreement with PSG.
