Edouard Mendy fires a parting shot at Todd Boehly following Al-Ahli switch

Eduard Mendy fails to mention Chelsea owner Todd Boehly in goodbye message

Senegalese international Edouard Mendy has ignored Todd Boehly’s name in his farewell message to Chelsea fans and thanked Roman Abramovich as he joined Saudi club Al-Ahli in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The veteran shot-stopper had a season to forget as he endured a poor campaign where he lost his position to Kepa Arrizabalaga and played only 12 matches for the Blues across all competitions. To say that it has been a fall from grace for the 2021 best goalkeeper according to FIFA.

He also picked up a thumb injury at the beginning of the campaign and missed the majority of the season, which saw Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel enjoy poor spells in charge. Little did we know that M,endy too would be on his way out come the end of the campaign.

However, Mendy’s three years at Chelsea did not go to waste; he was picked up as number one between the sticks and helped his side to the Champions League title. To say that he wasn’t key to the club’s success under Thomas Tuchel would be an understatement.

Following losing his place, the 31-year-old also did not extend his contract, which made his future at Chelsea uncertain, and now Mendy has successfully joined Saudi side Al-Ahli. Given that he wasn’t keen to pen fresh terms, it makes sense for us to cash in.

However, in his farewell message, the goalkeeper thanked everyone except one Chelsea person from the board, as he shared his message on Instagram, (h/t Mirror) which read as follows:

“I want to sincerely thank [ex-owner] Roman [Abramovich], [ex-director] Marina [Granovskaia], [ex-advisor] Petr [Cech], Christophe [Lollichon, head of goalkeeping], and the entire staff who made it possible for me to represent this prestigious club. I am thankful to my coaches and all the staff for the invaluable lessons and growth I experienced.”

Mendy was signed during the Abramovich era, and he is grateful to Petr Cech and the old owner for bringing him to the club. During the Bohely era, however, he did not appear in enough games, and his future appeared to be questionable, which could have been the reason he did not mention his game. To be fair, we can understand his admiration for Abramovich given that the Russian gave him a shot in the big time. The same cannot be said for Boehly, whose stint has proven poor for certain players.

The 31-year-old made a significant difference in goal, and we will always recall how good he was throughout the 2020–21 season when he won the Champions League. Given that the Spanish goalie will serve as the starter under Mauricio Pochettino, the club should prioritise purchasing a backup goalkeeper for the upcoming season.
