Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku shares his childhood struggles as he prepares to face Manchester City in the Champions League final on June 10 in Istanbul.
Last season Chelsea signed the 29-year-old, but he was loaned out to Inter after failing to make an impact in front of goal.
Despite this, his loan with the Serie A club got off to a rough start, as he missed the majority of the games due to injury.
The former Everton striker, though, had a great recovery from his injury, scoring a number of significant goals and aiding Inter in reaching the Champions League final.
Lukaku is not desperate to win the Champions League final, and a defeat or win won’t defy his legacy as a player. But the striker offered a powerful and moving background to his participation in the largest club football match in Europe, (h/t Metro) as he said:
“All the goals that I have scored—everything. I promised him (my grandfather) that I would look after my mom, and when I was 12, I did that. So every time I look at my mom and see her in the stands, I look at him [pointing upwards] after every goal and I say, I did it. It doesn’t matter—wins or losses—I take it in my stride. These are real family issues. So, for me, he meant the world to me.”
We have seen him celebrate many times by looking upwards in the sky. Now we know the meaning behind it.
The Belgian forward has accomplished so much in his career, and a Champions League victory could be an outstanding achievement above all. We have heard many stories of football players who overcame adversity to become professional athletes.
In addition to being players, they serve as role models for many fans and send them messages that no matter how difficult life gets, they should never give up. Lukaku’s story is no different. It is a reminder that the players are humans themselves.
The striker, meanwhile, apparently wants to remain at Inter, and Chelsea are also working to sell him permanently. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to see how he works out under Mauricio Pochettino but given our investment in the player, it is probably smart that we recoup some fees before its too late.
As for the Champions League final, Chelsea fans will undoubtedly be hoping he can get his hands on the trophy over their Premier League rivals.
