Frank Lampard took over the helm in April after Graham Potter was sacked as Chelsea manager on April 2 and Bruno Saltor oversaw our 0-0 league draw against Liverpool.
Since then, the English tactician has lost all six games as our caretaker boss. This includes four Premier League matches and the two-legged UEFA Champions League quarterfinals against Real Madrid.
It has been a horrid showing. Our most recent game saw us utterly dominated by Arsenal in a 3-1 league loss at the Emirates. We are 12th in the table with 39 points from 33 games.
Chelsea have scored just 31 times in the league so far. That is a shocking tally for a team accustomed to finishing in the top four in the past two decades.
Lampard has obviously come under fire for the results, although we were losing games at an alarming rate even before he became our caretaker boss. But the former Everton manager believes everyone understands that he came into a difficult situation at SW6.
He said at his recent pre-match press conference, via Football.London:
“I think everyone understands the difficulty of the situation I’ve come into, I certainly did when I came in. Especially in those first two weeks where we played five times, two against Real Madrid and these things without much time to lay things down. You have to accept that as a consequence of the job. As much as you have your great moments, there will be some moments where they’re not.”
Thankfully, the west London giants are closing in on appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their next head coach. The Argentine manager has the experience and has shown that he can work with a young squad to achieve impressive results, as he did with Tottenham Hotspur.
There was no way fans were ever going to be on board with even the murmuring of Lampard becoming a permanent manager. He had a good season at Derby County but during his three spells in England, he has seemed to be massively out of his depth.
Some of his decisions now as well, such as playing for a couple of games with a midfield diamond and starting a lone forward, or completely ousting Benoit Badiashile from the first-team picture haven’t gone down well with all of our fans.
