Chelsea loanee set for Stamford Bridge return following mixed Serie A campaign

Romelu Lukaku will return to Chelsea with Inter Milan not keen on keeping him

Romelu Lukaku is expected to return to Chelsea in the summer because Inter Milan does not want to risk losing money by keeping the striker.

Inter Milan won’t be able to afford the possible expense of another deal for the Belgian international, according to the Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Daily Mail).

The Italian club is under financial strain as a result of deficits of €784 million (£694 million) over the last 10 years and an operational low of almost €150 million (£133 million) every year. Chelsea, for their part, are unlikely to sell the striker for cheap.

Instead, the club will save money because they paid €8 million (£6.9 million) to buy him back on loan, plus they paid a sizeable amount of his salary despite his lack of performance.

The 29-year-old has been unable to make an impression for a Serie A team, scoring only seven goals in 24 appearances throughout all competitions. He has also been sidelined for extended periods of time due to injuries.

Chelsea, however, doesn’t want the player and is trying to find him a long-term home. If he leaves, the Blues might make a tidy profit considering that their most recent financial statements show significant losses of £121 million. However, as per reports, Lukaku wants to stay at Inter.

Given his history of injuries and mediocre play dating back two seasons, it would be extremely unlikely that Chelsea would be interested in having him back.

We already have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who Chelsea is attempting to get rid of, so adding Lukaku will just make the situation worse and undoubtedly have an impact on the club’s salary structure.

Therefore, it will be wiser to sell both forwards this summer for a fair price and sign a proven striker who can solve Chelsea’s goal-scoring problems for the upcoming campaign.
