Florian Plettenberg: Manchester City now interested in Chelsea star Mason Mount amid Liverpool links
Reliable German transfer expert and Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Manchester City are ‘interested’ in Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount amid links to Liverpool.
The England international is set to enter the final 14 months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and talks over a new deal are yet to progress. As a result, he could leave this summer.
Manchester City’s entry into the transfer race could prove to be decisive. They have the financial means to sign most players that they go after.
Plettenberg’s tweet claims that Mount’s salary demands are proving to be an issue. If the Cityzens flex their financial muscles, then there is no major reason why they wouldn’t satisfy the 24-year-old’s financial desires.
He tweeted:
“News #Mount: Talks about a new contract beyond 2024 are still very complicated. Chelsea is aware of the fact that Liverpool is pushing for him! #MCFC is also interested in signing him. Biggest problem: His salary demands! Understand that there are demands from around €5m to €15m/year.”
What to make of this?
Honestly, it’s never going to be easy to stomach any transfer that sees a Chelsea player join an arch-rival. Jorginho may have been on the decline but his move to Arsenal in January was still an uncomfortable experience for our fans.
Strengthening a direct Premier League rival at your expense is never advised. We did sign Raheem Sterling from Manchester City in one of the headline deals of last summer, so there is a line of communication for transfers between the two teams.
Manchester City can promise Mount UEFA Champions League football and a potential place in their first-team set-up considering Ilkay Gundogan’s age and Bernardo Silva and Rodri’s links to Barcelona.

Moreover, Mount moving to Liverpool could also provide them with a much-needed young midfielder to add to their ageing, bland midfield. It’s like between the devil and the deep blue sea. The ideal situation would, of course, be a contract renewal in SW6.
