Luis Enrique plans swoop for Atletico Madrid superstar if he becomes Chelsea manager

Luis Enrique plans Jan Oblak swoop should he take over as Chelsea manager

According to The Evening Standard, former Spain boss Luis Enrique will swoop in for Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak should he be handed the reins at Chelsea.

The Blues are currently without a permanent manager following Graham Potter’s abru[pt exit earlier this month. Club legend and former boss Frank Lampard will act as interim manager until the season ends as the club looks for the man to take them forward.

Amongst those under consideration is Luis Enrique. The Spaniard made a name for himself at both Barcelona and AS Roma before taking over the Furia Roja. While the latter two ended unceremoniously, he showed his true ability as a manager by leading Barcelona to a treble.

Luis Enrique had travelled to London to discuss managing Chelsea.

Todd Boehly will hope that Enrique can work the same magic at Stamford Bridge. Despite the club’s reckless spending over the last couple of windows, much needs to be done to fill the gaps in the current roster.

One of the spots that need to be addressed is in between the sticks. Neither Kepa Arrizabalaga nor Edouard Mendy have impressed and a new number one appears to be on the radar come summer.

Enrique is clear on who he wants in goal and wants the club to move for Atletico star Jan Oblak. The Slovenian is amongst the best goalkeepers in world football and surely would be a reliable last line of defence for the Blues going forward. Oblak’s contract at the Wanda Metropolitano runs until 2028 and it will be far from easy for the Blues to land their man.

Chelsea have also held talks with other alternatives. The likes of Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, Brentford’s David Raya and Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel are all seen as options.

Having a solid rearguard is imperative if we are to build a side with reliable foundations. A goalkeeper who can stop goals can easily earn as many points as a striker who can find the back of the net consistently.

Enrique seeking a new goalkeeper is a poor look for Kepa who will have played under the Spaniard for the national team. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper, he has certainly fallen short of expectations at Stamford Bridge.
