Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba claims the club is unrecognizable from when he was a player following the abject 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
The loss more or less ends Chelsea’s season as the club continues to flounder in the lower half of the Premier League standings. There are currently only seven games left for the Blues in the Premier League and the top four ship has all but sailed.
Todd Boehly has spent a tremendous amount of money on players to strengthen the team since becoming the new owner of Chelsea. However, it appears to have made us worse than before.
But thus far, it has been demonstrated to be a managerial challenge, leading to the firing of Graham Potter. Now, it appears that Frank Lampard is on a similarly skippering slope after losing all four games in charge.
However, Drogba claims that the acquisition of young players by the new owners only aggravated the club’s performance and caused it to drop to the 11th position. Tuesday night, Drogba spoke to Canal Plus (h/t Metro) and said:
‘’I no longer recognise my club. It’s not the same club anymore. There is a new owner and a new vision.”
‘‘Of course, we try to compare with what was done under the Abramovich era, where there were a lot of player acquisitions but the choices were very smart. Bringing in a Petr Cech, Andriy Shevchenko, Hernan Crespo, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Florent Malouda, and so on is to win titles.”
You can definitely hold the owners responsible for their massive spending without a plan in place. Todd Boehly is better off inculcating a vision before going about enacting it.
Since managers need time to establish the correct balance in their squads and implement their systems, firing Thomas Tuchel first and Graham Potter subsequently doesn’t make sense if you want to create a long-term project.
Under Roman Abramovich, however, this wasn’t the case; we fired managers on a regular basis. It however,w as offset by a regular deluge of trophies, something that is remote at the moment.
Additionally, the caliber of players never gave in without a fight regardless of who was in the manager’s seat. The same cannot be said of the current roster and Drogba’s assessment speaks for itself. Hopefully we can now take a step back and decide the next best foot forward.
