After Romelu Lukaku’s racial taunts during Inter Milan’s Coppa Italia tie against Juventus, Chelsea reacted to the striker’s racial epithets by posting on Twitter in support of him.
Lukaku netted in injury time from the box to level the score as Juventus and Inter Milan held to a 1-1 draw at Allianz Stadium.
The Belgian striker then celebrated the goal by raising a finger to his mouth in front of Old Lady’s supporters, which saw him receive a second yellow card for the aggressive gesture as he was dismissed from the game.
But things didn’t work out well for the Belgian striker as Juventus supporters racially abused him. It is believed that Juventus and the police are working together to identify the guilty supporters.
He did, however, also get support from Chelsea, who posted on their official Twitter account, “We’re all behind you, Rom.” along with a pair of yellow heart emojis. The 29-year-old, who returned to Chelsea in the summer of 2021, has rightfully demanded strict action for the racist abuse he suffered against the Old Lady.
Lukaku, who has been on loan at Inter, has endured a difficult season, as he only made 16 appearances in Serie A, scoring six goals.
It is really disappointing to see players being abused in such a manner. Lukaku had a difficult season due to numerous injuries, making it impossible for him to perform at a high level. Despite this, he has demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess by scoring four times in his past three games.
This isn’t the first time he’s been racially abused in 2019; Cagliari supporters treated him in a similar manner. Racism is a disease that does not seem to get eradicated from our beloved sport, but that could be because of how lenient authorities have been.
FIFA must establish rigorous regulations to combat these stereotypes since they are now commonplace in football and have a negative psychological impact on players. The bare minimum would be for Juventus to take harsh punishment against their own fans. On a more holistic level, there have to be proper proceedings and potential jail-time or massive fines for people caught taking part in such vile activities.
Until that isn’t done, we can’t weed out the unwanted elements in the stadium.
