Chelsea add Manchester City legend to managerial shortlist

Chelsea include Vincent Kompany in the head coach shortlist

Chelsea have added Vincent Kompany to their short list of managerial candidates as they continue their hunt for a permanent manager.

The Times, (h/t Sun), claims that Kompany has emerged as an unexpected name among the Blues’ managerial contenders. The Belgian is, of course, regarded as one of the very best players in the entire history of Manchester City, captaining them in their most successful era.

Due to their inability to identify a viable replacement for Graham Potter at Chelsea, the Blues have chosen Frank Lampard as their caretaker manager until the end of the current campaign.

However, the team has not benefited from Lampard’s temporary comeback as they have lost their first three games under him.

And now, with owner Todd Boehly delighted with the former Manchester City defender’s managerial spell in the Championship, he has been named on the Blues’ shortlist for the position of future manager.

However, a number of candidates have been mentioned as the future Chelsea manager, with former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique continuing to hold the lead.

Enrique reportedly phoned Chelsea’s owners to convey his ideas and even flew to London because he felt inclined to take the job before Chelsea’s Champions League match against Real Madrid in the first leg.

But Lampard was chosen by Boehly as interim manager, disappointing the former Barcelona coach. Now, it is also thought that Chelsea officials spoke with Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon and Luciano Spalletti of Napoli.

In his first spell as Burnley’s manager, Kompany has led them to promotion to the Premier League, and the fact that he has a record of 74 victories in 144 games speaks volumes about his management abilities.

His words in the locker room demonstrate that he is the type of manager who can foster a winning attitude in the players. However, the Premier League is quite different from the Championship, and if he is hired, he would take over a sizable, splintered group that he could be unprepared to manage.

As a result, employing him next season would be premature. We can evaluate his managing abilities in the Premier League and if he does well then we can hire him if we get a chance for the 2024/25 season. The last thing we need is another manager being sacked prematurely.

If a manager like Amorim, Spalletti, or Julian Nagelsmann gets off to a bad start, their reputation alone can get them extra months in the office and a chance to get going at Stamford Bridge. If Kompany doesn’t get instant results, fans will be asking for his sacking almost instantly.
