Newcastle United enter the race for Chelsea contract rebel

Newcastle United join Liverpool in the race for Chelsea star Mason Mount

According to Daily Mail, Newcastle United have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount, who is yet to sign a contract extension.

Mount has his contract expiring at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). He has rejected a few offers from Chelsea as the temptation to become one of the best-paid players in the team is there. Right now, the England international is one of the lowest-paid players.

Liverpool have been interested in the 24-year-old for some time now and it was recently reported that the Reds are highly likely to sign him in the summer. Tony Cascarino urged him to snub the Merseyside move and opt for taking a route towards Newcastle.

Since the Saudi takeover, we all know that the Magpies have one of the deepest pockets in the game. So, if they offer the money demanded by Mount, there is a chance he leaves.

The Cobham Academy product is one of the best talents Chelsea have produced in the last decade. He was one of the main reasons why the Blues were good in the last two seasons under Thomas Tuchel. Granted that there has been a drop-off this time around, but that can be said about most players in the team.

Mount is not just a versatile player, but a candidate for captaincy going forward. He is still young and will improve his game to a level most expect him to reach.

So, Chelsea cannot let him go just because there is a valuation rift. We have seen the club spend crazy money to buy players in the last two transfer windows. It is now time to spend some of that to keep hold of one of their key assets.
