Joe Cole and Owen Hargreaves praised Chelsea star Kai Havertz, who was impressive in the 2-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
The German international was at his best against the Bundesliga giants and scored the decisive goal on the night. It helped the Blues overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg and book their place in the final eight of the competition.
Havertz, who went up to take the penalty, saw his attempt hit the post, but the referee awarded a retake of the penalty after an encroachment by a Dortmund player, and this time the German International calmly dispatched the penalty, giving Chelsea a 1-0 aggregate lead.
Prior to his team’s match against Dortmund, Havertz had endured a drought of goals and only scored six goals for the Blues this year. Thankfully he has come clutch once agan at the right time.
Apart from the penalty, the 23-year-old was visible all over the pitch as he assisted in the buildup and showed calmness when receiving the ball. Thankfully we saw him step up when it was needed.
Cole and Hargreaves admired the former Bayern Leverkusen player’s performance (h/t Express.UK) while speaking to BT Sport, as they stated:
“I thought Kai Havertz was absolutely outstanding, and Chelsea had so many great performances, keeping a clean sheet and scoring two goals.” but positives for this Chelsea team.”
Havert was genuinely exceptional throughout the game; it appeared as though he had elevated himself with such a strong showing. He also worked effectively with other Chelsea players. Hargreaves was particularly impressed with Havert’z courage. He went on to add:-
“That shows real courage, to be fair. He stepped up, the composure to step up and put it in the same place, I thought he was brilliant today. A lot of people say as a false nine, a player in different positions, I just thought he delivers. He was fantastic today, showed real composure in big moments.”
As Chelsea were instructed to retake the spot-kick, he also accepted the responsibility of converting the spot-kick and displayed composure by putting the ball in the bottom right corner.
He has now assumed Jorginho’s responsibilities from the pot, and perhaps he will be even more successful when taking penalties in clutch moments.
We also believe that the goal has given him the chance to rediscover his ability to score goals, as he is one of the few players who can perform well in tight games, as he did against Manchester City in the Champions League final, where his single goal secured the victory.
