Graham Potter confirms Chelsea’s designated penalty taker after Jorginho’s transfer to Arsenal

Graham Potter names Kai Havertz as first-choice penalty taker for Chelsea after Jorginho’s transfer to Arsenal

Following Jorginho’s transfer to Arsenal, Graham Potter has selected Kai Havertz as Chelsea’s first-choice penalty taker. Jorginho had previously been the Blues’ preferred option.

With shootouts excluded, Havertz has only ever taken one penalty for Chelsea, but it was a crucial one. It arrived during extra time in the FIFA Club World Cup final, and the 23-year-old expertly buried it against Palmeiras to hand us the trophy.

On the day of the deadline day of the January transfer window, the 31-year-old switched from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium, leaving the Blues without the need for a skilled 12-yard kicker.

The west London club hasn’t received a penalty since Jorginho joined Arsenal, so it hasn’t been possible to announce the midfielder’s replacement.

But, Potter believes he has found a perfect successor for Jorgingo and will now take all of Chelsea’s penalties going forward.

However, (h/t Football.London). the former Swansea City manager named a preferred penalty taker in the games and made the following announcement during a news conference:

“We want to get it done before that, but if not, ok, we’ll have to go through with it.” Kai has been the designated penalty taker in the absence of Jorginho.”

Chelsea forward Kai Havertz sends a strong message to his critics after RB Salzburg winner.
Chelsea forward Kai Havertz.

He attempted seven penalties for the senior team throughout his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, and he converted all of them, a feat that is quite outstanding. Potter would be expecting that Havertz will be prepared to propel Chelsea into the quarterfinals if the referee does call for a penalty.

With the pressure, you are under to score from inside the box and avoid letting the goalkeeper get under your skin, taking a penalty is not an easy task.

Jorginho, who is renowned for his skill at taking penalties, will be missed because it requires a tremendous amount of poise and composure to put the ball in the net. And now we count on Havertz to take the club’s penalties whenever he is on the field.

Hopefully, this is also a good way for him to increase his goals tally and with it, his confidence in front of the net. On the contrary, missing crucial spot-kicks could do the opposite, but at this level, and given Havertz’s experience, we can count on him to be the right man for the job.
