Glen Johnson has given a suitable price for Mason Mount as the Englishman’s future at Chelsea continues to be up in the air.
Johnson says if the Blues are thinking about offloading the midfielder this summer, they can sell him for a princely sum of around £100 million.
The English international has been linked to transfers to both Manchester United and Liverpool. The end of the 2023-24 season will mark the end of Mount’s Chelsea deal (Transfermarkt). He has thus far turned down all extension offers at Stamford Bridge and could be on the move if the impasse is not breached.
The 24-year-old expects his pay to be comparable to that of the highest-paid Stamford Bridge stars. He is yet to receive a contract from club management, though. The ball is clearly in the club’s court here.
Man United are rumoured to be Mount’s top admirers and are monitoring his condition, while the likelihood of a transfer to Anfield has grown higher.
And Johnson believes Chelsea should bring in about £100 million if a rival wants Mount this year. He also believes they must fix his contract difficulties and should not let him potentially depart for a free in the summer of 2024.
The former Chelsea player, who was speaking to Betfred (h/t Express), claimed that Mount’s contract renewal was crucial and that they needed to make a decision about his future.
“The clock is ticking, and Chelsea needs to be bold regarding the business side of it. This whole situation regarding Mason being linked with a couple of Premier League clubs seems like a bit of a bluff tactic to me.”
A player like Mount, who is still in his 20s and has not yet reached his peak, would be capable of being a Premier League regular for years to come. There is no reason why we should not demand top dollar for a player of his calibre.
However, we must first determine whether we can persuade him to extend his contract because he just has one year left and losing him for free would be a terrible loss. He still has great potential as a player, but he has been struggling this campaign and will need to improve his performance. Hopefully, he can do so by the start of the following season.
But if everything goes south, we’ll have to decide on his price, which should range between £70 million and £80 million. Anything less would be a serious loss of investment.
