Transfer News: Real Madrid add Chelsea star to summer wishlist

Chelsea star Reece James is attracting interest from Real Madrid

Chelsea star Reece James has emerged as a priority transfer target for Real Madrid according to Spanish publication AS (h/t Sun). The European champions are huge admirers of James and are keen to add him to their roster.

Since joining the first team from the Chelsea youth system, the 23-year-old has been a significant player for the Blues. A solid attacker, he is the epitome of the modern-day full-back.

James just signed a new contract that will keep him at Chelsea until 2026. Real will need to fork out a heavy amount to even get the Blues to the negotiating table and even then it remains unclear if the Londoners will entertain an offer.

Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois and Antonio Rudiger joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in recent years. Last summer, Rudiger was Real Madrid’s most recent free-transfer signing from the Blues.

Also, it is believed that Chelsea will sell a number of underperforming players to make room for new additions during the summer transfer window. It should help the team reconcile their finances after Todd Boehly’s exorbitant spending over the last two transfer windows.

James, though, won’t be among them because he remains an integral part of the Boehly project, which may force Real to look elsewhere. Also a Chelsea man through and through, James is someone well aware of the pride involved in wearing the Blue jersey.

Considering James has been Blues’ one of the top right-backs and will be at Chelsea for years to come, it is very clear that the Blues won’t sell him. It would be naive of us to sell him given that he is young and possesses every quality that a contemporary right-back has.

Real will need to look for other right-backs; they also don’t have enough depth there. One alternative is Dani Carvajal, although he isn’t very quick, gets worn out, and is also in his 30s, and the team rarely plays Lucas Vazquez, who is the second option.

So, it will not be wise to even consider selling him and he is of the best right-backs since Branislav Ivanovic and now he has replaced another quality right-back Cesar Azpilicueta.
