Chelsea handed major blow in their pursuit of prolific Serie A superstar

Chelsea handed PSG challenge in their pursuit of Victor Osimhen

Premier League giants Chelsea have been handed a severe blow in their pursuit of Victor Osimhen with French champions PSG entering the fray.

As per Nicolo Schira (h/t The Sun)Paris Saint-Germain are considering signing the 24-year-old during the 2023 summer transfer window. The French giants have once again fallen short at the European level.

It will be challenging for the Blues to sign the striker because Manchester United and Arsenal are also vying for his services. Osimhen has scored 19 goals in 22 Serie A outings this season and is having an outstanding campaign.

And after 26 games, Luciano Spalletti’s team is 18 points ahead of Inter Milan, who are in second place. This puts the Gli Azzurri in an ideal position to secure the Scudetto.

The French team may have an advantage in luring the Nigerian to PSG. This is because their executive Luis Campos, has previously worked at LOSC Lille who acquired Osimhen from Belgian club Charleroi in 2019.

Before moving to Napoli for around an initial £62 million, the attacker went on to record 18 goals in one campaign with Lille. However, at Napoli Osimhen is valued at £107 million, as they intend to earn handsomely from him.

And PSG are aiming for a squad makeover as they are charged with revitalising their team’s offence this summer around Kylian Mbappe. Meanwhile, Neymar might possibly be released, Lionel Messi’s future looks uncertain as he is yet to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season, (Transfermarkt).

This is undoubtedly bad news because PSG may show more initiative in acquiring the Napoli attacker as Osimhen and their chief executive officer, Lucas Campos, previously worked together at Lille. They are also a financially sound club, as evidenced by their earlier signings of Neymar and Mbappe for £200 million and £165.7 million, respectively.

Chelsea lack a reliable goalscorer and signing Osimhen will see him go straight into the lineup as the club’s ace. The Blues also have a better record than PSG in European competition and can offer the Nigerian ace a better shot at continental glory.

However, we have competition from other teams, if Todd Boehly decides to agree to his value then we will have a chance to sign the striker. Failing to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League is unlikely to help matters either.
