Report: Massive clearout on the cards as Chelsea prepare for summer transfer window

Chelsea could sell up to 11 players in the summer transfer window

According to The Athletic (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea are set for a major overhaul in the coming summer window with as many as 11 players potentially leaving the club.

Chelsea signed eight players in the January window, in addition to bringing seven last summer. In that period, they haven’t let go of many as well.

As a result of that, Graham Potter is having to deal with a huge squad, with good players not getting to play regular minutes. As the cliché goes – you can only field 11 players at a time.

There is a future of a lot of players under scanner ahead of the latter part of this season. Mason Mount, whose contract expires in 2024 (Transfermarkt), hasn’t signed a new deal yet and could be sold.

Hakim Ziyech’s move to Paris-Saint German was all but done in January before the documentation mistake from Chelsea blocked the transfer. We won’t be surprised if the Moroccan leaves in the summer.

Among the other players in the exodus list are Christian Pulisic, Mateo Kovacic, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Kovacic is wanted by Manchester City in the summer.

It will be an important time for the club because as much as it is important to buy the right players, it is equally paramount to identify the right players to let go of unless the decision is already made by the player to go.

For example, Mount has been a Chelsea player since the age of six. Selling him might be a mistake because he loves the club and has the quality to be a key player in the coming seasons.

Kovacic has proved that he is a very good midfielder. The club needs to extend his contract and make him stay at Stamford Bridge.

Let’s hope that they make the right decisions regarding the departure of players. Selling just for the sake of it wouldn’t make sense.
