Chelsea plan to offer Romelu Lukaku in a swap deal for former Blues star

Chelsea are eyeing up a swap deal consisting of Tammy Abraham and Romelu Lukaku

According to Calciomercato (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are potentially eyeing up a sensational swap deal consisting of Romelu Lukaku and Tammy Abraham.

Both Lukaku and Abraham are former Chelsea strikers but in different ways. After a horror season at Stamford Bridge last time following a £97.5m move from Inter Milan, the former was sent back on loan to the Italian side last summer.

The latter was signed by AS Roma on a permanent deal worth £34m back in 2021 on a five-year contract. Chelsea are believed to have a buy-back clause of £68m.

After a very good first season in Italy where he scored 27 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions, Abraham has fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho this time around.

Seeing his record in Italy (notwithstanding the recent falling out of the favour), Chelsea are potentially looking to sign him back.

To reduce the cost labelled in the buy-back clause, the Blues may offer Lukaku to Roma in a swap deal. This ploy could work because there is mutual respect between the Belgian and Roma boss Mourinho, having worked together in their stints at Manchester United.

It is clear that Chelsea have no plans to restore the 29-year-old into the XI once his loan spell at Inter ends. So, it makes sense to get him off our books permanently.

But, the need for a striker is there too. Can the signing of Abraham fulfil the gap in goals in the team? Possibly so. The England international has shown that he knows where the back of the net is. Even in the 2019/20 season for the Blues, he scored 15 goals in 34 league games.
