Enzo Fernandez, who joined Premier League side Chelsea in a deal worth £105.6m, was the eighth addition during the winter transfer window, taking the club’s January spending to £288 million.
The Blues were one of the most active teams in the January transfer window, bringing in high-profile players like Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88 million among others. The lavish outlay certainly has not amused rival clubs.
Additionally, the club has been accused of financial fair play fraud and has also been giving new signings long-term contracts. One can see other sides not being happy about us doing what they cannot.
Javier Gomez, the head of La Liga’s cooperative (h/t FoxSports), has accused Chelsea of cheating by making huge acquisitions during the transfer window as he said in a video:
“Essentially, they are doping the club. They are injecting money not generated by the club for it to spend, which puts the viability of the club at risk if the shareholder leaves.”
“In our opinion, that is cheating because it drags down the rest of the leagues.”
Todd Boehly, who took over the ownership this year, spent £270 million in the summer transfer window, which was second only to Real Madrid’s (£292 million) in 2019. And now, they have outspent their summer acquisitions in the January window, investing (£288 million) as the Premier League set a new spending record of £2.5 billion this year.
Others have been unsettled by Chelsea’s large expenditures as they are not facing a penalty for financial fair play breaches. Chelsea must follow the guidelines because they frequently participate in European competitions.
The Blues are thought to have only suffered three FFP losses of £5 million in their most recent accounts, which cover the period until 2021, so they have a decent bit of room for permissible losses.
And if they break FFP rules, UEFA has a broad range of sanctions for breaking the regulations, including point deductions, warnings, and even the loss of European championships.
We simply hope that we don’t breach any FFP rule as that would negatively impact the club’s acquisitions and have an impact on every aspect of them. Under Boehly’s ownership, we have assembled a team of young players, and if they don’t perform, the club will suffer substantial losses.
