Two rival managers astounded by Chelsea’s January spending

Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola left astounded by Chelsea January transfer window

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp were shocked by Chelsea’s January transfer expenditure, which saw the club shatter the British transfer record by spending £106.8 million on Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea dominated the market and were able to sign a few high-profile players with significant investment. Their first big investment was the £88 million purchase of Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk, followed by the recent signing of Enzo Fernandez, who won the 2022 World Cup.

And it’s apparent that the fact that one Premier League club was able to spend so much that would alarm numerous leagues and managers

With Fernandez’s arrival, the club spent £320 million in January and £600 million overall during Todd Boehly’s ownership.

And it has certainly pricked the itches of certain Premier League managers (h/t Guardian), with Klopp and Pep giving their remarks on Chelsea spending:

Guardiola: “That’s what really, really counts to us.” What Chelsea has done and what the other clubs have done is not my business. “A few years ago, eight or nine teams sent a letter to the Premier League about our spending, wanting us banned, so definitely [people treat City different from others].”

Klopp: “They are all good players, really good players.” So from that point of view, congratulations. When you can do it, obviously people do it. But I don’t know the standard or how it’s possible with all the things around, and it’s obviously not up to me to explain how it works.”

They have the right to their own beliefs, but when it comes to spending, Manchester City were one of the heaviest spenders in the Premier League.

And despite bringing in players of the highest calibre, they have yet to win the Champions League, which has been their main objective under Guardiola’s tenure or maybe Chelsea’s victory against them in the final of the 2020–21 season still bothers them.

Liverpool may not have spent enough money on transfers, but it undoubtedly had an effect on their team because half of their players are injured and they lack sufficient backups.

They also lack depth in their midfield which has forced Klopp to play James Milner and Jordan Henderson, who hasn’t been impactful this season in the middle, while in attack also they don’t have enough options with five goals scored in the past six matches and defence has been shaky with 10 goals conceded in last six games. This has affected their performance, and they are currently ninth in the standings.

Boehly operated in Chelsea’s best interest by giving the team more depth, even though there are still some areas that need to be strengthened. However, this will happen in the future, and Chelsea have already recruited enough quality players who are prepared to make an impact here.
