“I can stand here”- Chelsea star reveals dressing room atmosphere amidst poor results

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell reveals the atmosphere in the dressing room

Speaking to the club media, Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell reveals the atmosphere in the dressing room amidst a bad run of form and the manager’s future in doubt.

If the run of form from going into the Southampton game wasn’t bad enough, it became worse when Chelsea conspired to lose to a relegation-threatened Saints at home.

It was another game where the Blues failed to score a single goal. Since the World Cup, it has happened six times in 11 games. It is not as if they are scoring bucketloads of goals in other games too.

Here’s what Chilwell said when asked about the atmosphere in the dressing room and more (h/t Chelsea website):

“Again, not good enough. I can stand here and say we created chances, like I said in Dortmund, but it doesn’t really mean anything. We need to win these games.

“We need to work hard, it is a pretty flat dressing room at the moment. It is hard to get into it, in terms of what we did right and wrong today, but we have time now until our next game to work hard.”

Amidst the questions regarding his future, Telegraph reported that the Chelsea owners still have no intention of sacking Graham Potter. They even revealed some of the reasons behind the decision, the major one being the fact that the boss did not have a pre-season with the squad when he was appointed.

What that does is tells us that the club’s hierarchy is ready to stick with Potter till the end of this season and judge the results when he has a pre-season with the squad.

As much as that is sensible thinking from them, it cannot be understated how bad things are at the moment. It is not as if we can accept losing games left, right and centre till the summer, shall we?

Potter must use the backing he has received from the club management to change this run of form. We are just about alive in the Champions League, with Borussia Dortmund coming to west London defending a one-goal lead. In the league, there is not much hope of finishing in the top four (11 points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur).
