Chelsea set to ramp up pursuit of Coppa Italia winning Serie A star

Chelsea set to step up pursuit of Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries

According to a report from 90min (h/t Football. London), Chelsea are set to step up their pursuit of talented Dutch full-back Denzel Dumfries in the last few days of the transfer window.

That Chelsea are on the lookout for an option to provide backup to Reece James in the right-back role is no secret. The English international is very injury prone and often tends to be on the treatment table.

The Blues have quite a few options to sign for the right-back role but it does not get much better than Dumfries. The talented Dutchman has been unbelievable for Inter Milan and his quality is undoubted.

Anyone who watched the Euros 2020 and the FIFA World Cup 2022 will know just how good the Dutch defender can be on his day. Excellent going forward, Dumfries is also no slouch defensively.

Playing in a wing-back role for both the national team and Inter Milan, Dumfries is given the freedom to get forward and this is where the defender really thrives. This could also be the only problem for Chelsea.

As good as Dumfries is, we still don’t know how he will play in a back four which is what Graham Potter has preferred to use in most games. The Dutchman will need to know that it is a position that requires a bit of adapting.

Chelsea to step up Dumfries offer

Another thing that can become an issue for Chelsea is how they fit in both Reece James and Dumfries and keep both of them happy. Both are world-class players in their own right and ideally, they will want to be starting week in, week out.

If Chelsea are merely looking at a backup to Reece James, then Dumfries is not the answer. However, if they are trying to build a model like Man City where they have two starters for each position, then this makes sense.
