“It’s huge”- Graham Potter urges Chelsea fans to accept Roman Abramovich era is over

Chelsea boss Graham Potter urges fans to understand that the Abramovich era is over

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup tie against Manchester City, as quoted by Evening Standard, Chelsea boss Graham Potter has urged the Blues fans to realise that the Roman Abramovich era is over and there is a new leadership at the club.

Despite a run of games that has seen Chelsea currently lying 10th in the league table, Potter is under no pressure of getting sacked by the new ownership group led by Todd Boehly. Mirror has reported that the former Brighton and Hove Albion boss will be backed even if he fails to deliver a top-four finish this season.

In response to the critics, Potter sounded agitated and talked about the need to realise that the old regime is not there anymore.

Here’s what the boss exactly said (h/t Evening Standard):

“There is a completely different ownership than there was. That is hard for some people to get their head around because for twenty years Chelsea was one thing and now all of a sudden it’s different.

“Yet people still think back to what happened in the past twenty years. That is normal but it is completely different. The reason for me to take the job was the chance to shape a club that is in a massive transitional period. It’s huge.”

By the tone of the quote, it does seem like Potter is not scared of the sack at the moment and is willing to work through this transition period at the club under the new ownership.

While watching underwhelming performances on a regular basis is not a good sight, it is good to see the current owners willing to back their man with the hope that he will turn things around.

It is not without financial backing as well. Chelsea have signed three players in this window so far – David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos and Benoit Badiashile. They have not ruled out a move for Enzo Fernandez and striker Marcus Thuram has been linked in the past few days.

It does feel that Potter is trying to send the message to people that let him work with this new ownership for a longer period of time before big results can be expected. But, we all know this is Chelsea Football Club. Anything less than a win is considered a failure. Irrespective of the board’s backing, the manager may soon feel pressure from the fans if the performances do not improve.
