Tottenham Hotspur make enquiry to sign Dutch star on Chelsea’s transfer radar

Spurs make enquiry to sign Chelsea target and Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries

According to 90min (h/t Football.London), London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have made an enquiry to sign Chelsea target and Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries.

The Blues have been strongly linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international in the last few weeks. A few days ago, Football.London reported that Chelsea are looking to sign a backup for Reece James after getting worried by the number of injuries he has picked up in the last 12 months.

Spurs have Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty fighting for a spot in the right wing-back position. However, in different times under his tenure, Antonio Conte hasn’t been convinced by either of them. The Italian once talked about not wanting to be stupid enough to play the latter (BBC).

Transfer News: Chelsea interested in signing Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries.
Tottenham Hotspur have enquired about the availability of Chelsea target Denzel Dumfries.

Inter Milan, although have slapped a price of £50m in order to ward off potential interest from clubs, are not ruling out a sale as they are struggling with financial stability.

Dumfries arrived at the San Siro from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2021 and has a contract with the Italian club untill June 2025 (Transfermarkt). He is currently busy representing the Netherlands in the World Cup as they prepare to face Christian Pulisic’s USA in the last-16 stage.

The 26-year-old is a wing-back trade but he can operate as a right-back or as a right-sided centre-back in a three-man central defence. At Inter though, he has played no position other than the wing-back.

In terms of his playing style and the qualities he possesses, Dumfries has quite a lot of similarities with Reece James. Both like to go forward and create chances but are equally good in recovery runs and defensive contributions. James is probably ahead of Dumfries in the latter, but there is not a lot in there.

So, the Dutchman could be an ideal backup for the Englishman, provided we don’t allow Spurs to take a step ahead in signing him. That is, if the Dumfries agrees to take up that role. He is 26 and has played every single minute of the Netherlands’ World Cup games in Qatar.

Given his status, it could be hard to convince him to be James’ understudy.
