Chelsea to make another push to land World Cup winning South American ace

Chelsea will push again to sign Enzo Fernandez in the coming hours

According to Transfer Guru Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea will push again to sign Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in the next hours.

The plan is to get the 21-year-old in the January transfer window, rather than waiting till the end of this season. The player has accepted the bid from the Blues. The completion of the deal is dependent on the decision by Benfica.

A couple of days ago, it was confirmed that Fernandez has accepted the personal terms with Chelsea. The club is ready to pay above the release clause to get the payment terms in their favour.

Benfica played their first game back after the World Cup, and manager Roger Schmidt handed Fernandez the start. He was subbed off in the 89th minute and had tears rolling out from his eyes on the bench. Schmidt fears the midfielder may have played his last game for the Portuguese club. Here’s what he exactly said (h/t Metro):

“In my opinion Enzo played well today. I don’t know if it was Enzo’s last game. He is a great player, since he arrived at Benfica he has played fantastic football.

“And even as a person he is totally identified with the club. As I said before, in football sometimes things happen and players have to make decisions.

“Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks.”

The World Cup winner was named the best young player of the tournament in Qatar. He has risen to prominence in world football in the last year or so. The former River Plate midfielder only arrived at Benfica in the preceding summer itself.

The 21-year-old is a fantastic talent who can play in multiple positions across the midfield. He can pass the ball well, can sift out attacking dangers of the opposition and is a dynamic presence in both boxes.

Chelsea could do with a player of this profile in their team. Graham Potter‘s men have lacked a midfielder who can impact well in both boxes for the team. Fernandez can not only offer that, but longevity too given he is only 21 now.

If we pull off this deal, it would be a game-changer in terms of how the midfield will have an upgraded player in terms of quality compared to what we have currently.
