Chelsea ‘ready to step in’ the moment Inter Milan superstar becomes a free agent

Chelsea will be at Inter Milan’s front door if Milan Skriniar does not sign a new contract

According to Calciomercato (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are ready to step in and be at Inter Milan’s front door if Milan Skriniar does not sign a new contract.

The Slovakia captain is having his contract expire at San Siro at the end of this season (Transfermarkt). He has been one of the best centre-backs in Europe in the last few years.

Inter is trying their best to make sure that the defender stays for another season, while Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly is ready to step in if the player becomes a free agent in the summer.

A few days ago, it was reported in Football.London that Inter are looking at Chelsea centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly if Skriniar leaves.

Is there a swap deal on offer here? Probably so. But, Thiago Silva is 38 now and won’t go on forever. Moreover, the Brazil captain’s contract is expiring in the summer with no agreement on an extension yet.

But, the other side of the possibility is that Chelsea are looking to sign young Croatian centre-back Josko Gvardiol. So, he can become a long-term replacement for Silva and the club can do a swap deal involving Skriniar and Koulibaly.

Skriniar has been an expert playing in a three-man central defence. Blues boss Graham Potter has tended to play the same system, so this move would suit them system-wise.

Moreover, with the possible departure of Silva in the summer, getting Skriniar would add quality and leadership to the team. He is a national team captain, who is dominant and a good communicator. These traits are not to be underestimated.

All in all, Chelsea going for the Slovakia international would make a lot of sense. We can only hope that the player does not sign the new contract.
