Chelsea could make a move for 25-year-old Ajax star in January

Transfer News: Chelsea eyeing Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez in January

According to Football. London, Chelsea could make a move for talented Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez in January with a transfer for West Ham star Declan Rice seeming increasingly unlikely at least for now.

This is not the first time the Mexican is being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. Alvarez is very highly rated at Amsterdam and he could be a very smart midfield reinforcement from the Blues.

The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has been at Ajax since 2019. He is very versatile and can play at centre-back, defensive midfield, central midfield and even further forward.

Alvarez has played 19 times for Ajax across all competitions this season, scoring one goal and providing two assists across all competitions. Stats don’t show how good he can be though and he is essential to the way the Eredivisie club play.

Alvarez has a contract with Ajax until 2025 (Transfermarkt). If Chelsea want him, they might have to be willing to spend the big bucks on him and if his performances are anything to go by, he will be worth it.

Despite the presence of a number of options in midfield, Chelsea could do with a few changes in that department. Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are on the wrong side of their 30s and might not be around for long.

Mateo Kovacic is an exceptional footballer and has had a great World Cup and Conor Gallagher is a great talent but Edson Alvarez could be the perfect replacement for Jorginho in the Blues midfield in the long-term.

Rice is Chelsea’s long-term target for that position but they cannot make a move for the Englishman at least until the season concludes. Alvarez, Rice and Gallagher can define our midfield for many years to come.
