Chelsea and Tottenham could enter bidding war for £26.2m defender

Transfer News: Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur could enter a bidding war for Denzel Dumfries

Chelsea and rivals Tottenham Hotspur could enter a bidding war for Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries. This is according to Calciomercato (h/t Express).

The report adds that the Italian giants have slashed Dumfries’ asking price to just £26.2 million for the January transfer window. Such a figure is likely to be affordable by both the Premier League clubs.

Both London clubs are interested in the 26-year-old Dutchman who has impressed since moving to Inter in 2021. A regular for his side, he could see two giants go head-to-head for him in January.

Dumfries has featured in 20 games so far this season in all competitions, scoring two and assisting another three in the process. The Netherlands international is currently in Qatar is likely to feature for his country at the World Cup.

Chelsea need an understudy for Reece James. The Englishman has been one of the best players for his side this season, but his recent injury has highlighted the lack of depth at the right-side for the Blues.

While Cesar Azpilicueta is an experienced option to have, he is 33 and cannot be expected to play every game. Graham Potter has had to make do with players in that position, with the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic also being deployed in the right-wing back position.

It would hence make sense for the Blues to bring in an experienced player like Dumfries. While James is likely to remain the number one choice, it will be good for Potter to have some competition for him. Also, the second half of the season is packed with games, and the Englishman could do with some rest at times.

Dumfries is likely to play at the World Cup starting from next week. Decent performances there could entice both the London clubs to make a bid for him. Fans will hope that if the 26-year-old does leave Inter, it is for west London.
