“Not good enough”- Chelsea tipped to reinforce key position and deems current options inadequate

Paul Parker tips Chelsea to sign a wing-back as Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella “not good enough” for Graham Potter

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has tipped Chelsea manager Graham Potter to sign a new wing-back, with Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella not deemed good enough. The ex-Red Devil feels the English and Spanish left-backs do not fit the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager’s style of play.

Potter has played different systems in his short time at the Stamford Bridge side up until now. The gaffer is still looking for his best players and system with the Blues.

Speaking to BeMyBet (h/t Express), Parker, who also had a small stint at Chelsea during his playing career, believes the English boss will look to bolster his squad with a natural wing-back capable of playing on the left.

“Both Cucurella and Ben Chilwell are much better as a full-back than a wing-back.

“So I don’t really see them fit perfectly into how Graham Potter wants to play. So, I’m absolutely sure that Chelsea will go on the market and try to find a new wing-back that will suit Potter’s way of playing.

“Cucurella and Chilwell are just not good enough, it’s as simple as that.”

Chilwell joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020 from Leicester City. Since then, he has been impressive for us. However, injuries have hampered the defender’s time in West London.

Fans who have seen the England international play know that he is good both defensively and going forward. The left-back was an important part of the side under Thomas Tuchel. And the 25-year-old has been one of our best players over the years.

On the other hand, Cucurella was bought by the Stamford Bridge side in the recent transfer window from the Seagulls. The Spaniard was Brighton’s Player of the season for the 2021/22 campaign. And he thrived under Potter in East Sussex.

The 24-year-old is a versatile player and the English manager has used him in a back three and as a wing-back. However, last season, the defender mostly played at left-back.

Potter is once again experimenting with Cucurella at Chelsea. In the last few fixtures, the Spaniard has been deployed at centre-back with Chilwell on the wings.

For most spectators, left-back is not an area for concern. However, with the England international’s injury, it remains to be seen what the club decide to do in the upcoming transfer window.
