Chelsea told to pursue “controversial move” for this striker instead of Cristiano Ronaldo

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink tells Chelsea to focus on signing Harry Kane instead of Cristiano Ronaldo

Speaking to Grosvenor Casinos (h/t Football.London), former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has suggested the Blues focus on signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane instead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has had his contract terminated at Manchester United by mutual consent following the explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Chelsea were interested in signing him in the summer when he initially shared his ambitions of leaving Old Trafford. But, former manager Thomas Tuchel blocked the move. Since the contract termination this week, odds are in favour of the Blues revisiting a chance to sign the 37-year-old, but it does not seem likely as of now (Telegraph).

Transfer News: Chelsea to offer Romelu Lukaku plus cash for Harry Kane According to Calciomercatoweb (h/t Express), Chelsea are set to offer out-of-favour striker Romelu Lukaku plus cash to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, to try and entice English superstar Harry Kane to move to Stamford Bridge next season. The Belgian striker who had such an awful season at Chelsea last season was sent out on loan to Inter Milan after having fallen out with the coaches at the West London club. However, the Italian giants don't have a buy option for the Blues forward This means that there is a chance that the Belgian finds himself back in England at the start of next season and it seems like neither the Blues nor the player are keen on the reunion. As good as the 33-year-old striker is, there is no denying that the talented striker is just a short-gap solution and cannot be viewed as a long-term option. This means that Chelsea might have to look for a new striker next season, someone who can lead the line for the next few seasons. It has now emerged that one player who has been an early favourite for Graham Potter is Spurs superstar Harry Kane. The 29-year-old English striker is on top of his game right now and will be entering what are arguably the prime years of his career. At the age at which he finds himself, Kane will want to be at a place where he can stat-pad some trophies for his resume and there are not many places better than Chelsea to do that. Spurs fans were of the feeling that their star man will want to stay in North London considering that he was chasing the record of ‘most goals scored for a single club’ in the Premier League. However, now that the 29-year-old has beaten Sergio Aguero to it, he might be more open to a move away from the Lilywhites. That said, a move away from Spurs doesnt sound ridiculous and the English striker could be a Chelsea striker soon .

Here’s what Hasselbaink said when asked about who should Chelsea focus on signing (h/t Football.London):

“I would have done Ronaldo for Chelsea in the summer, for one year, but obviously now I think the priorities are bigger in the summer. I would try to persuade Kane to come.

“That would be a very controversial move, but surely he’s going to want to win things. Surely he knows he’s not going to win with Spurs.”

Kane has been linked with Chelsea since the summer window as the Blues aim to find a number nine who can score goals for them, unlike the previous few.

The England captain has 18 months left in his contract and chances of him extending in north London seem low. A few weeks ago, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson said that the club selling the striker for £88m in the summer would be good business (Express).

Kane turned 29 in the summer and has a few good years left in him. Ronaldo, on the other hand, is 37 and fast approaching the twilight of his career. Even though the latter may come for free transfer fee-wise, his contract demands would be magnanimous, to say the least.

Both players guarantee goals though, something Chelsea have lacked in abundance from their number nines in the last few years.

Since Kane won’t come before the summer if at all, one idea could be to sign Ronaldo for free now, add goals to the team for the rest of this season and then go big for the England captain in the summer.
